Guide to Banknote Conditions

Here's a detailed guide to the grades we use for our listings, but keep in mind grading is subjective. You may always return any note that you don't like within 14 days of receipt.

UNC (Uncirculated): A perfect note with no circulation signs, no folds or creases, and full original crispness and sheen. May show a slight "half moon" mark from the security thread.

AU (About Uncirculated): Nearly perfect, with a single light fold or handling mark that doesn’t break the paper. Crisp and colorful.

XF (Extremely Fine): A crisp, attractive note with minor handling. May have a few light folds or one firm crease. Still firm and bright.

VF (Very Fine): A circulated note with several folds but still decent. Paper is firmer than average, corners lightly worn.

F (Fine): A well-used note with many folds or creases. Paper is soft, and some soiling may be visible.

VG (Very Good): A limp, worn note with heavy creasing, edge wear, and possible small tears. Design may be faded.

Discover this 250,000 Turkish Lira banknote (Pick #211), issued non-dated but circulating between 1998 and 2001. This note provides a glimpse into Turkey's monetary history during a period of significant economic change and high denominations.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk: Founder of Modern Turkey

The front of the banknote proudly features the portrait of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938). Revered as the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey, Atatürk is an iconic figure whose vision fundamentally transformed Turkey into a modern, secular nation-state. Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, Atatürk led the Turkish War of Independence and subsequently implemented a series of radical reforms across political, social, legal, cultural, and economic spheres, known as Kemalism. His image on banknotes symbolizes his enduring legacy and his central role in shaping contemporary Turkey.

The Red Tower in Alanya: A Historical Landmark

The reverse side of the note showcases the magnificent Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) in Alanya. This iconic octagonal brick tower is a major landmark of the city of Alanya, located on Turkey's southern coast. Built in the 13th century by the Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubad I to protect the harbor and the Seljuk castle, it stands as a prime example of medieval Seljuk military architecture. Its distinctive red bricks give it its name. The tower's robust construction and strategic location highlight Alanya's historical importance as a naval base and trading port. Today, the Red Tower is a popular tourist attraction and houses an ethnographical museum on its ground floor, symbolizing the rich history and cultural heritage of Turkey's Mediterranean region.
