Nurse. Guerrilla. President. Martyr.

Samora Moisés Machel (1933–1986) was a guerrilla commander, revolutionary, and the first President of independent Mozambique. Born in Gaza Province, he trained as a nurse before joining FRELIMO — the Mozambique Liberation Front — in 1963. He rose to lead the armed struggle against Portuguese colonial rule and became president when Mozambique gained independence in 1975. His government nationalized land, education, and healthcare, and he was a fierce opponent of apartheid South Africa and Rhodesia. He died in a plane crash near Mbuzini in 1986 under circumstances that remain disputed — many believe South Africa's apartheid regime was responsible. His widow, Graça Machel, later married Nelson Mandela.

Mountains, Aloes, and Warriors

The reverse is a love letter to Mozambique's wild interior. Dominating the scene are the Chimanimani Mountains — ancient, wind-carved peaks that straddle the border with Zimbabwe, home to Monte Binga, Mozambique's highest point at 2,436 meters. In the foreground, a traveler's palm shoots skyward alongside a blooming aloe — plants that have sustained communities for centuries. A kingfisher watches from the lower right. And at the left edge, silhouetted warriors with spears and shields stand guard — a nod to the pre-colonial kingdoms that ruled this land long before any European set foot here. In the corner, a concentric diamond bull's-eye pulses in purple and blue — geometric, futuristic, and utterly unlike anything on older Mozambican notes.
