• Kenya is the largest economy in East Africa — and one of the continent’s most important financial hubs.
• Jomo Kenyatta, whose statue anchors the obverse, was Kenya’s first president — and spent eight years imprisoned by the British during the Mau Mau uprising. The British used systematic torture in the Mau Mau detention camps.
  
• Agriculture employs over 40% of Kenya’s workforce and accounts for a quarter of GDP — the reverse of this note is a portrait of that reality: corn, camels, cattle, sheep, goats, and the people who tend them.

Kenya's electricity is 90% green

Most banknotes celebrate the past. The Kenyan 50 Shilling note celebrates the future — or at least the ambition of one.

The reverse is unlike almost any other note in circulation: wind turbines, a geothermal plant, solar panels. Three energy sources, labeled in both English and Swahili, arranged across a landscape that looks more like an infrastructure report than a traditional banknote design. Kenya generates over 90% of its electricity from renewables. This note is a statement of that fact, pressed into paper and put into circulation.

The obverse anchors the note in history. Jomo Kenyatta stands in bronze outside the KICC — the tower that defined Nairobi’s skyline for a generation. A buffalo head watches from the lower right. The word Harambee — all pull together — runs across the face of the note.

The 2024 reissue (P-52b) switched printers from De La Rue to Giesecke+Devrient and updated the signatures to Thugge and Kiptoo. The design is otherwise unchanged.
