The Female Warrior Who Would Not Surrender

Tjut Meutia (1870–1910) was one of the most ferocious resistance fighters the Dutch colonial army ever faced in the Aceh War — a conflict so brutal and prolonged it nearly bankrupted the Netherlands. Born into Acehnese nobility in North Aceh, she watched the Dutch kill her first husband, then her second, then her third. Each time, she picked up a weapon and kept fighting. She led guerrilla raids through the jungle, commanded troops, and refused every offer of surrender. When Dutch soldiers finally cornered her unit in the forests of Pirak in October 1910, she charged at them rather than give up. She was shot dead at roughly 40 years old. Indonesia declared her a National Hero in 1964. Her face on this banknote is not a symbol of victimhood — it is a portrait of someone who chose death over submission.

Nutmeg, the Spice That Rewired the World

Banda Island — the largest of the Banda Islands in the Banda Sea — was, for centuries, the only place on Earth where nutmeg grew. That single fact made it one of the most strategically valuable pieces of land on the planet. European powers fought, lied, and massacred for control of it. The VOC (Dutch East India Company) seized the islands in 1621 under Jan Pieterszoon Coen and carried out a genocide that reduced the indigenous Bandanese population from roughly 15,000 to fewer than 1,000 in a matter of weeks. The Dutch then installed a plantation system worked by enslaved people and indentured laborers, and held a global monopoly on nutmeg for over 150 years. Today the islands are quiet, volcanic, and hauntingly beautiful — a paradise built on one of history's most forgotten atrocities.

The Fort That Outlasted an Empire

Fort Belgica sits on a hill above the town of Banda Neira, its five-pointed pentagonal bastion walls still largely intact after more than 400 years. The Dutch built it in 1611 — before the genocide, before the monopoly was fully secured — as a show of force over a population that kept resisting. From its ramparts you can see the entire harbor, the volcano Gunung Api, and the surrounding sea. The fort changed hands briefly during the Napoleonic Wars when the British occupied the Banda Islands from 1810 to 1817, and it was during this period that the British smuggled nutmeg seedlings to their own colonies — breaking the Dutch monopoly forever. Fort Belgica is now a UNESCO-listed heritage site and one of the best-preserved colonial fortifications in Southeast Asia.

The Dance That Speaks Without Words

The Tari Tifa is a traditional dance from Maluku (the Moluccas) performed to the beat of the tifa — a cylindrical drum made from a hollowed tree trunk and animal skin that is central to the musical traditions of eastern Indonesia, Papua, and the surrounding islands. The dance is performed at ceremonies, celebrations, and community gatherings, and its movements vary by island and village. The tifa itself predates written Indonesian history; it appears in oral traditions and ritual contexts across a vast swath of the eastern archipelago.
