José Trinidad Cabañas: The General Who Wouldn't Quit

José Trinidad Cabañas (1805–1871) was one of the most persistent figures in 19th-century Central American politics. A close ally of Francisco Morazán, he fought alongside him for liberal federalism and served as President of Honduras from 1852 to 1855. He was exiled, returned, fought again, was exiled again — a pattern that repeated across decades. Despite never achieving the lasting political union he sought, Cabañas is remembered as a symbol of liberal tenacity and Central American solidarity.

Ciudad Universitaria: Honduras's Academic Heart

The reverse depicts the Ciudad Universitaria — the main campus of the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH) in Tegucigalpa. Founded in 1847, UNAH is the oldest and largest university in Honduras, enrolling over 80,000 students. Its autonomy — enshrined in the constitution — has made it a center of political debate and student activism throughout Honduran history. Placing the university on the 10-lempira note alongside a liberal general sends a clear message: education and liberty are inseparable.

Printed in Russia

This 2019 variety was printed by Goznak — the Russian state security printing enterprise founded in 1818, which prints Russian rubles and passports and has produced banknotes for dozens of countries. Honduras's 10-lempira series has been printed by an unusually diverse roster of security printers across its various dates: Oberthur (France), Casa de Moneda de Chile, Goznak (Russia), and PWPW (Poland) — a rare numismatic footnote.

Own this note and you hold Honduras's liberal tradition in your hands — a general who fought for unity, a university that fights for minds, and a banknote printed in Moscow.

About Honduras

Honduras Unfiltered

  • Printed in Russia: This 2019 variety of the 10-lempira note was printed by Goznak in Moscow — the same state enterprise that prints Russian rubles and passports, making this a rare example of a Central American banknote with Russian origins.
  • The Soccer War: In 1969, Honduras and El Salvador fought a four-day war triggered by a World Cup qualifying match — though the underlying cause was land disputes and migration tensions.
  • Maya heartland: The ancient Copán ruins in western Honduras are one of the most important Maya archaeological sites in the world, renowned for their extraordinary sculptural detail and hieroglyphic stairway.
  • Banana republic — literally: The term "banana republic" was coined partly with Honduras in mind, where United Fruit Company once controlled vast swaths of land, infrastructure, and political influence.
  • Coffee powerhouse: Honduras is the largest coffee exporter in Central America and among the top 10 globally, with high-altitude growing regions producing specialty beans increasingly sought by third-wave roasters.

Who is World Money Store?

World Money Store is me, Βrian Grοss, the sole proprietor of this small business, based in Washington D.C. I've spend half my adult life in The Netherlands and Mexico and have an addiction to travel, history and languages (Spanish, Dutch Russian and a few others); Arabic my current challenge. My personal instagram is @df2dc.

I've been on ebay for 22 years, and I am also on Whatnot. I put together the website myself, and do all the purchasing.

I travel around the world to personally select a range of banknotes that I KNOW match the interests of my customers, and by traveling to the right places, I get them at the best prices, too.

I have three main groups of customers:

1. the ones who love diverse colorful and affordable notes from around the world

2. those who love to own pieces of the propaganda of communist dictatorships (Cuba, North Korea) and "bad guys" like the Ayatollah, Saddam, Gadaffi. Iran (Shah, Ayatollah), Syria (Assad, current).

3. those who seek Venezuelan and Iranian currency. We sell banknotes for collecting purposes only (our intention).

I happen to have a lot of depth and breadth in Mexico and Brazil, in addition to Cuba and Iran.

I don't focus on anything from the U.S. and Canada, items from before World War II, "lucky" serial numbers, or PMG-graded items.
