Other Characteristics

Marco Aurelio Soto: The Man Who Modernized Honduras

Marco Aurelio Soto (1846–1908) was one of the most transformative presidents in Honduran history. Installed with the backing of Guatemalan strongman Justo Rufino Barrios in 1876, Soto launched Honduras's Liberal Reform — modernizing the legal system, building roads and telegraph lines, establishing public schools, and opening the country to foreign investment. His right-hand man was Ramón Rosa (who appears on the 500 Lempira note), who drafted the new civil and penal codes. Soto resigned in 1883 under pressure and died in Paris in 1908.

Isla del Tigre: The Volcanic Island on the Back

Isla del Tigre is a dormant volcanic island rising 783 meters from the Gulf of Fonseca on Honduras's Pacific coast. The port town of Amapala on its shores was Honduras's main Pacific port for much of the 19th and early 20th centuries — and it was here that Marco Aurelio Soto formally inaugurated his government in 1876, giving the island a permanent place in Honduran political history. The Gulf of Fonseca is shared by Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua — one of the few three-country bays in the world.

Own this note and you hold Honduras's liberal golden age in your hands — a reformist president, a volcanic island port, and the signatures of three 21st-century central bankers on a 2-lempira bill.

About Honduras

Honduras Unfiltered

  • Named after a warrior: Honduras is one of the only countries whose currency is named after a specific indigenous resistance fighter — Lempira, who died resisting Spanish colonization nearly 500 years ago.
  • The Soccer War: In 1969, Honduras and El Salvador fought a four-day war triggered by a World Cup qualifying match — though the underlying cause was land disputes and migration tensions.
  • Maya heartland: The ancient Copán ruins in western Honduras are one of the most important Maya archaeological sites in the world, renowned for their extraordinary sculptural detail and hieroglyphic stairway.
  • Banana republic — literally: The term "banana republic" was coined partly with Honduras in mind, where United Fruit Company once controlled vast swaths of land, infrastructure, and political influence.
  • Coffee powerhouse: Honduras is the largest coffee exporter in Central America and among the top 10 globally, with high-altitude growing regions producing specialty beans increasingly sought by third-wave roasters.

Live in the United States? No surprise tariff bills when you receive your shipment!

  • Since the US president enacted high tariffs earlier in 2025, US collectors ordering from dealers in other countries have sometimes received nasty surprises - bills of 25-35 dollars for processing tariffs, in addition to 10-50% tariffs on the purchase amount.
  • World Money Store ships from the United States, so any and all tariffs due are already covered by us.
  • Live outside the United States? You are not affected by this issue.

Who is World Money Store?

World Money Store is me, Βrian Grοss, the sole proprietor of this small business, based in Washington D.C. I've spend half my adult life in The Netherlands and Mexico and have an addiction to travel, history and languages (Spanish, Dutch Russian and a few others); Arabic my current challenge. My personal instagram is @df2dc.

I've been on ebay for 22 years, and I am also on Whatnot. I put together the website myself, and do all the purchasing.

I travel around the world to personally select a range of banknotes that I KNOW match the interests of my customers, and by traveling to the right places, I get them at the best prices, too.

I have three main groups of customers:

1. the ones who love diverse colorful and affordable notes from around the world

2. those who love to own pieces of the propaganda of communist dictatorships (Cuba, North Korea) and "bad guys" like the Ayatollah, Saddam, Gadaffi. Iran (Shah, Ayatollah), Syria (Assad, current).

3. those who seek Venezuelan and Iranian currency. We sell banknotes for collecting purposes only (our intention).

I happen to have a lot of depth and breadth in Mexico and Brazil, in addition to Cuba and Iran.

I don't focus on anything from the U.S. and Canada, items from before World War II, "lucky" serial numbers, or PMG-graded items.
