East Germany GDR DDR—Speisentalon—Hotel voucher Zinnowitz Set 0.50+1 Mark
These Zinnowitz hotel-money meal vouchers from 1985 tell the story of an East German tourism system built to welcome Western visitors while keeping their spending separate from that of the local population. From the end of the 1960s, the GDR sought to provide Western tourists with accommodations of an international standard in selected four-star hotels and holiday homes, where exclusive goods were also available.
To prevent those goods from being bought up by local residents, special means of payment were created: value vouchers (Wertbons) and meal vouchers (Speisetalons). Issuing this hotel money (Hotelgeld) also made it possible to secure Western hard currency quickly and easily. A modest meal coupon was therefore part of a much larger economic strategy: attracting foreign visitors, controlling access to exclusive goods, and obtaining hard currency through tourism.
Issued by the Reisebüro der DDR (GDR Travel Agency), these vouchers were valid at food-service establishments and hotels in the city of Zinnowitz. Each coupon served as a Speisetalon, or food stamp / meal voucher, redeemable for hotel dining services. Its reverse listed specific cafés, a restaurant, and a milk bar where it was accepted as payment. The fronts feature the Reisebüro der DDR symbol, with a seahorse on the 0.50 Mark voucher and a fish on the 1 Mark voucher.
This listing brings together the 0.50 Mark and 1 Mark vouchers, cataloged as Huschka HG 89.1a and HG 89.2a. Such vouchers are heavily sought after today by collectors of Cold War history, East German memorabilia, and regional scrip (notgeld): small survivors of a system in which even a hotel meal reflected the division between East and West.

Who is World Money Store?
World Money Store is me, Βrian Grοss, the sole proprietor of this small business, based in Washington D.C. I've spend half my adult life in The Netherlands and Mexico and have an addiction to travel, history and languages (Spanish, Dutch Russian and a few others); Arabic my current challenge. My personal instagram is @df2dc.
I've been on ebay for 22 years, and I am also on Whatnot. I put together the website myself, and do all the purchasing.
I travel around the world to personally select a range of banknotes that I KNOW match the interests of my customers, and by traveling to the right places, I get them at the best prices, too.
I have three main groups of customers:
1. the ones who love diverse colorful and affordable notes from around the world
2. those who love to own pieces of the propaganda of communist dictatorships (Cuba, North Korea) and "bad guys" like the Ayatollah, Saddam, Gadaffi. Iran (Shah, Ayatollah), Syria (Assad, current).
3. those who seek Venezuelan and Iranian currency. We sell banknotes for collecting purposes only (our intention).
I happen to have a lot of depth and breadth in Mexico and Brazil, in addition to Cuba and Iran.
I don't focus on anything from the U.S. and Canada, items from before World War II, "lucky" serial numbers, or PMG-graded items.
