Reverse in orange features first Catholic mass celebrated in Brazil.

Obverse in blue features Pedro Álvares Cabral (c. 1467–1520), a Portuguese explorer and navigator who is best known for being the first European to reach Brazil. His voyage in 1500 marked the official European discovery of Brazil, which he claimed for Portugal. This event played a significant role in the Age of Exploration and the establishment of Portugal's colonial empire.

Key Facts About Pedro Álvares Cabral

  1. Early Life:

    • Cabral was born around 1467 in Belmonte, Portugal, into a noble family.

    • He was well-educated and trained in navigation and exploration, which were highly valued skills during the Age of Discovery.

  2. Voyage to Brazil (1500):

    • In March 1500, Cabral was appointed by King Manuel I of Portugal to lead a fleet of 13 ships on a voyage to India, following the route pioneered by Vasco da Gama.

    • On April 22, 1500, Cabral's fleet unexpectedly reached the coast of Brazil, likely due to a navigational deviation or intentional exploration.

    • He landed near present-day Porto Seguro in the state of Bahia and claimed the land for Portugal, naming it "Ilha de Vera Cruz" (Island of the True Cross). It was later renamed "Terra de Santa Cruz" (Land of the Holy Cross) and eventually Brazil after the brazilwood tree found there.

  3. Continuing the Voyage to India:

    • After staying in Brazil for about 10 days, Cabral resumed his journey to India.

    • He faced significant challenges, including storms that sank several ships, but he eventually reached Calicut (Kozhikode) in India, where he established trade relations and a Portuguese trading post.

  4. Legacy:

    • Cabral's discovery of Brazil laid the foundation for Portugal's colonization of South America. Brazil became one of Portugal's most important colonies and later grew into the largest country in South America.

    • His voyage also reinforced Portugal's dominance in global exploration and trade during the 16th century.

  5. Later Life and Death:

    • After returning to Portugal in 1501, Cabral retired from exploration and lived a relatively quiet life.

    • He died around 1520, and his exact burial place is unknown.

Why Was Cabral Sent to India?

Cabral's primary mission was to establish trade relations with India and secure Portugal's dominance in the lucrative spice trade. The discovery of Brazil was a secondary outcome of this voyage, though it proved to be historically significant.

Controversies and Debates:

  • Some historians debate whether Cabral's discovery of Brazil was accidental or intentional. Some believe he may have been aware of lands to the west due to earlier Portuguese explorations.

  • There is also debate about whether other explorers, such as the Spanish or Portuguese, may have reached Brazil before Cabral, but his voyage is considered the official European discovery.

Pedro Álvares Cabral's voyage is a pivotal moment in world history, marking the beginning of European colonization in South America and the expansion of Portugal's global influence.

Who is World Money Store?

World Money Store is me, Βrian Grοss, the sole proprietor of this small business, based in Washington D.C. I've spend half my adult life in The Netherlands and Mexico and have an addiction to travel, history and languages (Spanish, Dutch Russian and a few others); Arabic my current challenge. My personal instagram is @df2dc.

I've been on ebay for 22 years, and I am also on Whatnot. I put together the website myself, and do all the purchasing.

I travel around the world to personally select a range of banknotes that I KNOW match the interests of my customers, and by traveling to the right places, I get them at the best prices, too.

I have three main groups of customers:

1. the ones who love diverse colorful and affordable notes from around the world

2. those who love to own pieces of the propaganda of communist dictatorships (Cuba, North Korea) and "bad guys" like the Ayatollah, Saddam, Gadaffi. Iran (Shah, Ayatollah), Syria (Assad, current).

3. those who seek Venezuelan and Iranian currency. We sell banknotes for collecting purposes only (our intention).

I happen to have a lot of depth and breadth in Mexico and Brazil, in addition to Cuba and Iran.

I don't focus on anything from the U.S. and Canada, items from before World War II, "lucky" serial numbers, or PMG-graded items.
