Rwanda Unfiltered
- In 1994, Rwanda experienced one of the fastest genocides in recorded history — an estimated 500,000 to 800,000 people killed in 100 days.
- Thirty years later, Rwanda is one of Africa’s fastest-growing economies and consistently ranks among the continent’s least corrupt countries.
- Kigali is regularly cited as the cleanest city in Africa — plastic bags have been banned since 2008.
- Rwanda has the highest proportion of women in parliament of any country in the world — over 60% of seats.
- The mountain gorilla on this note was once projected to be extinct by the end of the 20th century. Conservation efforts — including gorilla tourism — have brought the population back from under 300 to over 1,000.
- Rwanda ranks 16th in the world for population density (UN 2024) — Think all the people of Illinois stuffed into Maryland. Or the population of Serbia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Kosovo, and Albania combined, sardined into just North Macedonia.
The Last Thousand Mountain Gorillas on Earth
The mountain gorilla exists in exactly two places on earth: the Virunga Mountains — straddling Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC — and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda. Nowhere else. Total wild population: just over 1,000 individuals.
Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park — the Parc des Volcans depicted on this note — is where Dian Fossey spent 18 years studying gorilla behavior before her murder in 1985. Her story became the film Gorillas in the Mist (1988), with Sigourney Weaver in the lead role. Her work, and the tourism economy it helped create, is a significant reason the species survived.
The small gorilla at the far right of the obverse is printed in color-shifting ink — gold to lime green to emerald, with a rolling bar effect when tilted. The area beneath “RWANDA” produces a rainbow pattern across a diamond field when the note catches the light at the right angle. For a note this size, the security printing is exceptional.
Rwanda’s Extraordinary Rebirth
Five years before this note was printed, Rwanda was still processing the aftermath of a genocide that killed up to 800,000 people in 100 days. By 2014, it had become one of Africa’s most cited development stories — fast growth, low corruption, clean streets, a parliament majority female.
The baskets on the reverse are not incidental. Rwandan woven baskets — agaseke — are a national symbol of reconciliation and craft tradition. They are given as gifts at weddings and ceremonies. They are sold internationally. They appear on the highest-denomination note in the country.
Own This Document of Rwanda, Before and After
This is the P-41 — Rwanda’s 5000 Franc note dated 1 December 2014, in Uncirculated condition. The highest denomination in the series. A gorilla that almost wasn’t. A country that rebuilt itself.
The ink shifts. So did Rwanda.

Who is World Money Store?
World Money Store is me, Βrian Grοss, the sole proprietor of this small business, based in Washington D.C. I've spend half my adult life in The Netherlands and Mexico and have an addiction to travel, history and languages (Spanish, Dutch Russian and a few others); Arabic my current challenge. My personal instagram is @df2dc.
I've been on ebay for 22 years, and I am also on Whatnot. I put together the website myself, and do all the purchasing.
I travel around the world to personally select a range of banknotes that I KNOW match the interests of my customers, and by traveling to the right places, I get them at the best prices, too.
I have three main groups of customers:
1. the ones who love diverse colorful and affordable notes from around the world
2. those who love to own pieces of the propaganda of communist dictatorships (Cuba, North Korea) and "bad guys" like the Ayatollah, Saddam, Gadaffi. Iran (Shah, Ayatollah), Syria (Assad, current).
3. those who seek Venezuelan and Iranian currency. We sell banknotes for collecting purposes only (our intention).
I happen to have a lot of depth and breadth in Mexico and Brazil, in addition to Cuba and Iran.
I don't focus on anything from the U.S. and Canada, items from before World War II, "lucky" serial numbers, or PMG-graded items.
