A Piece of Living Faith — Iranian Banknote with Devotional Overprint

You will receive a note.

Not just any note. Somewhere between the printing press and your hands, someone paused, inked a stamp, and pressed it onto this piece of Iranian currency — transforming an everyday object of commerce into something quietly sacred.

Here's the story behind what you're holding.

Iran is home to one of the world's oldest and most profound expressions of Shia Islam — the branch of the faith whose heart beats around the memory of Hussein ibn Ali, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, killed at the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE. Every year, during the month of Muharram, Shia communities across Iran and the wider Islamic world enter a period of mourning and remembrance for Hussein and the small band of companions who died alongside him. The tenth day — Ashura — is the emotional center of the calendar. Forty days later comes Arbaeen, when millions converge on Karbala in what is among the largest human gatherings anywhere on earth.

During these seasons, and throughout the year, a quiet folk tradition has long existed: the stamping of banknotes with devotional phrases. A rubber stamp, an ink pad, a steady hand — and suddenly a 1,000-rial note becomes a token of blessing. The inscription might invoke Hussein directly — Ya Hussein, "O Hussein" — or carry a Quranic verse, the name of a shrine, or a date marking a holy occasion. The note then moves: tucked into a child's palm at a majlisgathering, slipped into an envelope as a small gift, passed between friends as a gesture of shared faith.

This is tabarruk — the seeking and sharing of blessing through sacred association. It is one of the most human impulses in Shia devotional life: the idea that holiness can travel, that it leaves a trace on the objects it touches, and that passing something blessed forward is itself an act of love.

The note you receive will be an authentic Iranian banknote issued between 1992 and the present day. It will carry a hand-applied devotional stamp — the specific phrase, ink color, and denomination will vary. No two are identical. That is rather the point.

Condition varies by note. Circulated, as they were meant to be.

Who is World Money Store?

World Money Store is me, Βrian Grοss, the sole proprietor of this small business, based in Washington D.C. I've spend half my adult life in The Netherlands and Mexico and have an addiction to travel, history and languages (Spanish, Dutch Russian and a few others); Arabic my current challenge. My personal instagram is @df2dc.

I've been on ebay for 22 years, and I am also on Whatnot. I put together the website myself, and do all the purchasing.

I travel around the world to personally select a range of banknotes that I KNOW match the interests of my customers, and by traveling to the right places, I get them at the best prices, too.

I have three main groups of customers:

1. the ones who love diverse colorful and affordable notes from around the world

2. those who love to own pieces of the propaganda of communist dictatorships (Cuba, North Korea) and "bad guys" like the Ayatollah, Saddam, Gadaffi. Iran (Shah, Ayatollah), Syria (Assad, current).

3. those who seek Venezuelan and Iranian currency. We sell banknotes for collecting purposes only (our intention).

I happen to have a lot of depth and breadth in Mexico and Brazil, in addition to Cuba and Iran.

I don't focus on anything from the U.S. and Canada, items from before World War II, "lucky" serial numbers, or PMG-graded items.
