The Golden Angel

The Angel of Independence — officially the Columna de la Independencia — was inaugurated on September 16, 1910, the centennial of Mexico's declaration of independence, by President Porfirio Díaz. The gilded bronze winged figure atop the 36-meter column represents Victory, and at her feet rest the remains of independence heroes including Miguel Hidalgo, José María Morelos, and Vicente Guerrero.

The Angel is Mexico City's most beloved gathering point — where crowds erupt after World Cup goals, election victories, and national celebrations.
