The reverse of the 100 Shilling note is a census of Kenyan agriculture. Corn — nafaka. Farming — kilimo. Livestock — mfugo. Camels in the north, cattle in the highlands, sheep and goats across the drylands. People bent over the harvest. A dove in the corner.

It is a deliberately inclusive image — Kenya’s agricultural economy rendered as a single scene, labeled in both English and Swahili, placed on the note that most Kenyans handle most often.

The obverse pairs Kenyatta and the KICC with a leopard head at lower right — the most adaptable of the Big Five, found from rainforest to semi-desert, from game reserves to the edges of Nairobi itself. Harambee. All pull together.
